A brief history of Beer & More

Heike Schultz PGDipTours, MEntr

It really depends on when you decide that the history of Beer & More begins. Heike, born and bred in Germany, one could argue that beer and the making of it was put into her crib. Initially in Stuttgart but later in Regensburg, approximately on hour north of Munich, Heike was surrounded by beer and their makers. Regensburg, a city the size of Dunedin, has 7 medium size breweries and more in the vicinity, all with their beer pubs and beer gardens under the obligatory chestnut tree. From wheat beers for hot summer days to heavy and dark ales for cold winter nights, light lagers after work or elegant pilsners for the dinner out with friends, the choice of good and even great beers was always there.

It has been almost 20 years ago since Heike followed Michael with their two kids to Dunedin. The beer scene in those days looked very different. When Heike started working in the cruise ship industry in Dunedin, the question by the numerous international tourists was often: “where can we get a decent beer?” Have a local one was the diplomatic answer, the choice was only between two, only in the recent few years the choice grew. Something was missing. When the occasion arose, Heike grabbed it and in 2023 enrolled into the Otago Brew School on the Polytechnic Campus in Cromwell, Otago. During the hot summer she produced a fantastic Pale Ale, an outstanding Irish Red ale, and the best of all, a German-style Kellerbier (Amber Lager).

Of course, with her German roots, Heike believes that only water, hops, malt and yeast belong into a beer, nothing else, just as our forefathers wanted it, according to the German Purity Law from 1516. For sustainability, she is sourcing as many ingredients as possible locally and uses the pure Wanaka water.

Tell Heike what you would like to have for your special day, and she can brew it. Choose a tried-and-trusted recipe or let her put together something that’s uniquely you.

What is the more in Beer & More?

Just ask us, we can fill the gaps, from keeping the beer cold (fridge) to supplying the dispensing system, or even the bar tender and best of all, we can arrange for a sober driver. We have the contacts to ensure your special day becomes unique in its own right...but only if your event is located in the Central Otago area.

Heike is full of ideas and there is so much more you can do with the grains and even the left over beers. Watch this space.
